Botox Injections for Your Face, Your Body, and Other Approved Uses

by Chester Williams

Where can you get Botox injections? This cosmetic injectable can refresh your face, erase fine lines, and give you a more youthful appearance. But you can't get a Botox treatment just anywhere on your body. If you're considering botulinum toxin type A therapy, take a look at what you need to know about the top treatment areas.

Is Botox Approved For All Cosmetic Uses?

Like other cosmetic injectables, botulinum toxin type A has U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for specific uses. FDA approval means the government agency feels a drug (in this case, botulinum toxin injectables) is effective for a specific use.

The chemists, doctors, pharmacologists, and scientists at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) review the data on drugs, look at the effectiveness, and weigh the benefits versus the risks. FDA approval does not mean that botulinum toxin therapy, like other drugs, is approved for all uses. It also doesn't mean that the drug is risk-free. Your doctor will review the risks of the injectable before your procedure. These include potential side effects and adverse reactions to look out for.

What Cosmetic Uses Is Botulinum Therapy Approved For?

Botox is approved as a temporary treatment for crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines, according to the FDA. The injectable reduces the appearance of these types of fine lines by relaxing the muscles below the skin's surface. The botulinum toxin prevents the nerve signal that causes muscle contractions. Without contractions, the skin smooths over the area.

What Is An On- and An Off-Label Use?

You may have heard the terms on-label and off-label used in reference to botulinum and other injectables. An on-label usage is exactly what the name sounds like. This use is on the medication's label and is FDA-approved. Off-label refers to medical uses that are not specifically stated on a label or approved by the FDA. Temporary fine line treatment of crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines are on-label cosmetic uses of botulinum toxin type A.

Can You Use Botulinum Therapy On Your Body?

Is this injectable approved for body use? Onabotulinumtoxin A injectables have other non-cosmetic uses. These include injections for the prevention of chronic migraines, the treatment of cervical dystonia, the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and other select conditions. Even though these are not related to facial wrinkle reduction, botulinum therapy is not currently FDA-approved as a cosmetic body treatment.

About Me

Updating Your Look

A few months ago, I realized that I wanted to look a little bit younger. I got a job as a marketing representative, so I found myself traveling from place to place to sell our company's products and services. However, my older look seemed to be holding me back from communicating effectively with the younger crowd. To correct this problem, I started investigating plastic surgery, and I was really impressed with how many procedures were out there that could improve my appearance. I was able to completely overhaul my look by going through and undergoing a few procedures, and now I feel great. This blog is all about updating your look with plastic surgery.
